'Roxana', just as 'Robinson Crusoe' and 'Moll Flanders' is a fictitious autobiography by an 'exceptional' character: we all know what befell Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders has, to say the least, an eventful life with lots of ups and as many downs, and so too Roxana. However, this is pretty much where the similarities end/5(45). Robinson Crusoe's father counseled him to "seek the middle way", to be content with a settled and steady way of life. But Crusoe's restless nature lands him in one misadventure after another. Defoe moralizes a bit on his hero's foibles, and all in all, it makes for a great listen, well read by Mark Smith.

I thought I recalled the book, but what I recalled was the various Robinson Crusoe movies that I had seen. Needless to say the book is much different than Hollywood's version. For example, Crusoe's faithful friend and servant Friday was not a black African but rather a South American Indian/5(). Perhaps not as 'swash-buckeling' as I thought it would be, but it made for some interesting reading.
I think it provided a look at a period of history that is not very well portaited by today's writers; indeed the moral values brought out by Defoe are of a higher standard than most authors in the 20th century, (apart from authors with religious convictions with personal beliefs they are pushing)/5(18).
